Annual Members' Meeting for 2019 Held Wednesday November 27.
A brief summary of the annual report presented to the members of the Whangarei Racing Club at the meeting held last night at the Northland Club.
The Club’s Annual Members’ Meeting was held last evening, Wednesday 27th November 2019, at the Northland Club in Whangarei.
The annual report contained the Chairman’s and General Manager’s reports and the audited financial statements.
The Chairman summarised the proposed changes for the NZ Racing Industry with specific reference to the Future Venue Plan and the uncertainty surrounding those proposals. It was expected that the next NZTR plan would be released prior to Christmas.
The financial performance of the Club resulted in an operating deficit of $32,524. This was after a depreciation allowance of $101,407 resulting in an operating surplus before depreciation of $68,883.
The Chairman recorded the appreciation of the support of the Oxford Sports Trust, Four Winds Foundation and Pelorus Trust for the Club; along with the many businesses who sponsored a race or meeting throughout the season.
The General Manager highlighted the decline in field sizes and the increasing concentration of the industry in the northern region to the lower Waikato region, with many trainers based there very reticent to travel north of Auckland. Combined with the declining numbers of the main local stable of Logan Racing this meant the average field size was the lowest this decade and well below the national average.
The Club’s poor financial return from on-course betting ( deficit of $22,000) was outlined and the need for the Club to take action by reducing the number of manned terminals, introduce the self-serve terminals and recognise that many attendees, including trainers and owners, are happy to bet using their TAB accounts with their phones.
David Cairns did not seek re-election to the Board, but his position was taken by new Member Peter Lane. Peter has over 30 years’ experience working at the TAB or NZ Racing Board. Also a very active racing participant with his wife Kay who held a trainer’s licence since the 1991/92 racing season. Previously based near Levin the couple raced many of their horses with Figure in their name, for example, Figurehead.
The Lanes recently retired to the area bringing six of their retired racehorses for a warmer climate.
